How Ripple Uses XRP

While Ripple didn't create XRP, the company is the largest holder of XRP and uses the digital asset in its On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) solution. ODL uses XRP as a bridge currency to facilitate cross-border payments without pre-funding accounts.

"XRP is used in our product, On-Demand Liquidity (ODL), which is used by financial institutions to source liquidity in cross-border transactions by using XRP as a bridge currency."— Ripple Official Documentation

Legal Distinction

In the ongoing SEC case, the distinction between Ripple and XRP has been a central point. In July 2023, a U.S. federal judge ruled that XRP itself is not inherently a security, though Ripple's sales of XRP to institutional investors did constitute securities offerings.
